Narrative
Though this course doesn't necessarily fulfill my outcomes, it helped me understand about the struggles of Mexican/Mexican-Americans from being Indigenous to Chicano. I was able to learn more about identity, life, food, art, language and dialects, and overall the culture between Mexican origin and the United States. One of the works I completed for this course was learning about Dolores Huerta and the United Farmers Movement with Cesar Chavez. To me this really woke me up to how the word Chicano became a big part of the our Mexican-American Identity in this course. Other Knowledge I gained from this course was learning the history of the Monterey Bay area, such as the historical figure known as Tiburcio Vazquez and his rebellion against Anglo-Americans in this area. Learning about Tiburcio Vazquez and other rebels like him has now made me curious to learn why they rebelled in States like California, which were being taken by the U.S. from Mexico. I believe this course relates to all Spanish classes I have taken because of the Spanish history it shares, as well as my SBS 325 the Art of the Aztec Empire because of indigenous history. I also see great similarities to HCOM 346 African-American Life and Culture, because the two classes emphasize the struggles on minority groups. I intend to explore this learning experience more by constantly looking up history and facts, while also living in some of the positive lifestyles of Mexican-Americans.
