An introduction to the historical and cultural narratives that shape African American identities and experiences. The course focuses on such themes as African roots of African-American culture, freedom and inequality, black folklore and artistic expressions, migration, family and kinship, community and identity.
Narrative
This course contributes to MLO 4 as a secondary culture other than Hispanic. One of my best work in this course was a group project based on Hip-Hop and the 4 Elements. With the attachment below via PDF, this project was a successful zine that help to realize that the literature, culture, and urban language of African-Americans. Particularly, hip hop is an aesthetic movement like Spanish/Spanish-American literature movements. The knowledge I gained from this course were how African Americans north and south of the United States had to struggle with prejudice as well as being a multicultural and policultural people. However I wish to know more about the creole people, independent African American communities and black soldiers.
