Integrative Narrative
The reason why I chose the Spanish Language was because I wanted to be fluent, be professional with a bilingual and bi-literate background, and learn about my indigenous and Spanish ancestry that I inherit from my dad's side of the family. While taking the courses based on MLO 1-6 I was able to improve on my proficiency as well as some linguistic and literary skills that comes with the major. Indeed, I was glad to pick and work hard for the Bachelors of Arts in Spanish despite all the language barriers I had to go through. The best way I was able to learn was immersing myself locally and abroad. Locally, I have came to known my classmates which are majority Spanish speaking students who helped me with hard tasks throughout each course. I also gotten to know the City of Salinas well where I have done my Service Learning with elementary students and my Course Pathway with general civilians in the community. In addition, my Spanish speaking skills have helped me gained a part time job as a Library Clerk for the Salinas Public Library. Beside the local part of my Major Learning Outcomes, I still took to the liberty to study abroad and even travel for leisure as I have went to Cancun, Mexico and Cuzco, Peru. So, locally and abroad I've learn that immersion really helps to stay connected with Hispanic culture and language. However, my initial goal for this Major was to hopefully be fluent and I still have a long way to go. I really hope that I can be fluent in the future as I get more into graduate school and work on my career. The area I really want to focus most on is communicating in Spanish professionally for a business I dream of starting one some day. Though my goal hasn't been met, I have gained a lot of incite with literature, culture and linguistics. Now I feel I have accomplished so much.
