SPAN 426: Narrative Hispanoamericana
Taught in Spanish, the course studies Spanish American writers of the 20th century by emphasizing short stories and novels from the last 50 years. Uses literary texts to gain an understanding of Latino cultures, societies, and values.
Meets MLO 3
This course has taught me the influential literature movements of Latin America. For many assignments we analyzed the stories and the history of authors who were influenced by their literary movements. One great assignment I did for this class was analyzing La Fiesta del Chivo(PDF File below) A story about dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, also based on a real life historical figure and events. The knowledge I gained for this course really made me aware of all these Latin American literary timelines and purposes. So Hispanic authors like Julio Cortazar, Jorge Borges, etc. really stand out to me with their astonishing stories. I hope to read and learn more about these stories, movements , and authors as I progress in my Spanish in the future. I believe this course strongly relates to Span 304 Introduction to Spanish Literature because it covers similar authors and stories, as well as learning about each literary movement and causes. In the end, this learning experience has set me on the path to wanting to read more essays, novels, stories, and journals in Spanish.
